Wide fit shoes
When people think of mobility brands, they’re likely to think mobility scooters, wheelchairs and stairlifts. Not footwear. But here’s the thing: for the last sixty years we’ve made it our business to think about all of those things and everything else that affects our customers’ mobility. Right down to their toes.
For six decades we’ve tried to put ourselves in our customers’ shoes so that we can find every possible solution to their mobility needs. This helps us give the best customer service and most useful- and stylish- range of products. So where best to start than with their shoes!
It’s hard to put your best foot forward when you don’t have shoes that fit correctly or that you struggle to even get on. For years we’ve sold products to help those with long term illnesses such as arthritis and diabetes, and those who have just left hospital. We’ve sold reachers, walkers and dressing aids like revolutionary product Soxon (helps those with sore feet or who struggle to bend down, get their socks on independently and with ease). But then we realised these conditions can also affect the feet. For example, sensitive feet because of diabetes need footwear that’s easy to get on and doesn’t irritate the feet. Those who’ve had hip replacements sometimes need orthotics (a shoe insert that makes the length of the legs more equal) to wear in their shoes- but which brands produce shoes that can accommodate these?
We scoured the market for the best quality, comfort and styles. Extra wide fit shoes brand Sandpiper had the answers. They had the perfect blend of sandals, shoes, boots, slippers and even open-toed house shoes, to cater for our customers with ultra wide feet (4E-8E width) and problem toes.
Through Sandpiper, we discovered their sister brand Suave. Suave design and make shoes for wide feet (E-EE width). Their products were stylish and comfortable, but we couldn’t make the link between shoes for wide feet and mobility. However, a helpful conversation with Helped the Aged made us realise, proper fitting footwear has everything to do with maintaining mobility. Did you know that in the UK, many people trip or fall due to wearing footwear that is too big, size-wise, for them? People with wider feet have often worn shoes that are too big for them because the bigger size has given them the width that they needed. However, trips and falls that lead to mobility issues, could have been avoided by wearing footwear that is both the correct size and width.
We’ve spent the last year re-vamping our website to make it easier for our customers to use. We have also increased the range of shoes, slippers, boots and sandals we sell online. Thanks to now being a Suave retailer, we can even offer wide fit trainers as part of our range!
Selling ladies’ and men’s footwear only online, means our customers don’t have to leave the comfort of their own home to take their time choosing. It also means we can offer an even more impressive range as we don’t need to take up space in our showrooms.
However, because we are mobility specialists and we aren’t just online retailers (we’ve four stores across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire), our customers have the added benefit of being able to have their new shoes measured in our store if they choose to Click and Collect. Our trained staff can carefully measure the fit of a customer’s new shoes before they leave the store. That’s added reassurance that those new shoes are the ones for you.
