We recently completed a bathroom transformation in Rotherham that has not only made a world of difference to the homeowners, but has future-proofed that room of their house.
Despite having a stunning and well-kept existing bathroom, one of the residents of the property was beginning to find negotiating the bath increasingly challenging. The couple consulted Clark & Partners to see what mobility solutions were available.
With a walk-in shower already in place, it may have seemed that there was no real issue to solve. But, as mobility experts, we were able to see the potential problems with relying on this. Firstly, it was very small. Even simple adjustments like the inclusion of a shower stool and grab rail to offer more support should the owners become unsteady on their feet, wasn’t really feasible. Nor was there much room for washing and turning for someone who may not be as mobile.
Secondly, although low to the ground, the height of the existing shower tray could eventually pose a trip hazard. Together, we agreed it would be best to do away with the bath and small shower enclosure and install a more spacious walk-in shower with a shower tray with a lower profile. It would even include two grab rails that appeared as stylish towel rails, that would come in handy should the couple become less steady on their feet.
As Level 4 Trusted Assessors, our surveyors were able to look at the bathroom and not only work out a bathing solution but suggested other ways the property could be made more user-friendly. Looking to the future, the inclusion of two large radiators to keep the bathroom warm and cosy was recommended.
Having taken on board our recommendations, a new fully accessible bathroom was chosen by the homeowners.
As work got underway, aside from the obvious bathing obstacles, more serious issues were uncovered. Thankfully, as a full refurbishment was already planned, we were able to deal with these. Not only was the floor beneath the existing walk-in shower rotten, but so was one of the supporting joists.
Because we offer an holistic service, we had builders on hand who could replace the rotten joist and floor. Had the couple only hired a plumber, work would have been delayed whilst additional tradesmen were found and able to attend site.
With the hidden horrors taken care of, the bathroom the couple would get to enjoy for the coming years, could finally take shape.
The bathroom was fully tiled and painted, and a new floor was laid. A new bathroom suite and the new radiators were fitted. Importantly, the more practical walk-in shower was completed. However, something just as important to the house-proud couple was that their new bathroom was as stylish as it was ready for the future and any changing circumstances they might face. The sleek finish also makes it easy to maintain.
